ellaOne is an emergency contraceptive that can prevent pregnancy up to 5 days after you have had unprotected sex. Based on the results of clinical trials, ellaOne is thought to be 98% effective; only 2 in every 100 women who take it will become pregnant. It is more effective, however, the sooner you take it after unprotected intercourse.
ellaOne is available in a 30mg tablet which is suitable to take after unprotected intercourse of contraceptive failure. This emergency contraceptive is effective for a longer period after unprotected sex than Levonelle, a widely used morning after pill which prevents against pregnancy for up to 3 days. ellaOne is also proven to be better at preventing pregnancy; during trials significantly less women became pregnant after taking ellaOne than Levonelle during the first 72 hours after intercourse.
ellaOne 30mg modifies the activity of progesterone, a hormone that occurs naturally in the human body. By doing this it prevents the ovaries from releasing an egg, which then stops conception. The active incredient in ellaOne is ulipristal acetate which has some of the same functions as levonorgestrel which is found in Levonelle. Levonorgestrel influences egg development by interfering with ovulation, however, ulipristal acetate works to pause the release of an egg from the ovary, thus making it effective for longer.

This emergency contraceptive tends to cause very few side effect beyond nausea. Some women may experience mild bouts of dizziness, blurred vision, drowsiness and some difficulty concentrating after you take ellaOne 30mg.
It is advised that you take only 1 30mg tablet of ellaOne within 5 days after unprotected sex or after your regular method of contraception has failed. It is safe to take ellaOne at any point throughout your menstrual cycle and it can be taken with or without food. If you throw-up after taking this pill, you should contact your doctor immediately.
You can still continue using your regular contraceptive or morning after pill after taking emergency contraception, however a condom or other barrier contraceptive should be used as a precaution until your next period.
