Premature ejaculation is a sexual condition which occurs when a man ejaculates earlier than he or his partner would like him to during sex. Some men may also achieve orgasm in response to minimal sexual stimulation, without even reaching vaginal penetration. It’s estimated that 30% of men worldwide suffer from this problem so, although men find it embarrassing, there is no shame in seeking treatment for this fairly common sexual problem. There are prescription medicines available that can effectively treat premature ejaculation so you can get your sex life back on track.
The average time before ejaculation differs for every man. Some men are capable of lasting only a few minutes during sex, while others can delay ejaculation for much longer. This is what makes premature ejaculation such a hard condition to diagnose. Because everyone’s sexual response times are different, and some women take longer to orgasm than others, the best way to assess whether you need treatment is by assessing whether both you and your partner are satisfied with sexual intercourse. If you are regularly ejaculating earlier than you would like, or before your partner has had time to achieve orgasm, you may benefit from treatment.
Medical researchers have now defined premature ejaculation as occurring when a man reaches orgasm less than 2 minutes after penetration. If this is happening to you regularly, then you may be eligible for treatment.
Premature ejaculation is a common sexual problem and it’s estimated that 30% of men worldwide suffer from it at some point in their lives. In the past, premature ejaculation was thought to be caused by psychological factors, such as low self-esteem and anxiety, but new studies have also discovered that a number of physical factors can also cause premature ejaculation. Hormonal, urologic or neurologic factors may cause premature ejaculation to occur, and the condition has also been linked to low levels of serotonin in the brain.
Although premature ejaculation for most will be a matter of perspective, based on how long you are normally able to perform, doctors now define premature ejaculation as a condition where a man reaches orgasms within 2 minutes after penetration.
Several factors can cause premature ejaculation, including low confidence, stress, neurological problems, spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, guilt, fear, certain medications, anxiety, and interpersonal issues. Younger, more sexually inexperienced men can often suffer from premature ejaculation, but this is not a serious concern and should improve over time.
It is important to determine the causes of premature ejaculation before seeking treatment. Consider the following questions and seek advice from your doctor.
Once you have determined the cause of your condition, it’s much easier to seek treatment for it. If your problem is psychological in nature, counselling or psychotherapy would be extremely beneficial. If you have ruled out psychological factors, then you can seek alternative premature ejaculation treatment.
